Project Title: Community Based Supplementary Feeding Programme_(CBSFP)

Project Status: Running

Areas of Operation: Southern Karamoja; (Nakapiripirit and Amudat districts; Moroto and Napak districts)

About the Programme:

Andre Foods International (AFI) in partnership with United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP) has implemented supplementary feeding in four districts of south Karamoja since 2009. The implementation design is community based with most activities being conducted in the community with full involvement of community members in all capacities. The project is aimed at reduction in the prevalence of malnutrition by preventing progression of moderate acute malnutrition into severe acute malnutrition among targeted populations. Children under 5 are the major target and feed on corn soy blend super cereal plus (CSB+) while all other clients receive a premix containing corn soy blend, vegetable oil and sugar. Behavioral change communication (BCC) strategies have also been used to address moderate acute malnutrition. These strategies include complementary activities such as; exchange visits between and within ethnic groups; nutrition education through public address systems; radio spot messages and talk shows; nutrition and health education in primary schools; and training of mothers on formulation of the MAM therapy (METU).Emphasis has been placed on promotion of improved dietary habits, IYCF and WASH practices. Activities such as backyard gardening have also been employed to improve livelihoods among households with moderately malnourished children.
