Karamoja Region

The Karamoja region in Uganda is one of the most vulnerable areas to climate change and food insecurity in the country. The region has experienced changes in rainfall and temperature patterns over the last four decades, affecting the livelihoods of the agro-pastoral and pastoral communities. The region also faces challenges such as environmental degradation, poor infrastructure, a lack of social services, and limited market opportunities. AFI and our partners have implemented several interventions to build the resilience of households and improve their food security situation. Some of these interventions include mass malnutrition screening, resilience strategy development, and livelihood support programs. The totality of households living in the region report drought, climatic conditions, pest diseases and high food prices as the most frequent shocks in the Karamoja region. Therefore, strengthening resilience is quite necessary in all districts, especially Kaabong, Amudat, Kotido and Moroto.

West Nile Region

Uganda hosts over 1.5 refugees settled in 13 settlements across the country. The majority of whom are refugees from South Sudan, with a few from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, and Sudan. West Nile is one of the refugee hosting regions and it consists of 7 settlements among these are Rhino camp, Imvepi and kiryandongo in which AFI operates. As of 31 Dec-2022[1], the 3 settlements in total hosted about 262,223 refugees, majority of whom are women and children (85%). Rhino camp and Imvepi are active settlements and they continue to receive new arrivals. Although now closed to new arrivals, kiryandongo through OPM continues to facilitate family reunifications, resettlement for protection cases and addition of newly born babies. The Uganda government policy allows for free integration of refugees, equal access to government-provided social services, a chance to work and land allocation for farming and shelter. In the same way, UN agencies and other local and international organizations support the government of Uganda to provide relief services to both the refugees and host communities. Andre Foods International is responding to the needs of the refugees by providing food, water, sanitation, hygiene, child protection, and psychosocial support.
